Learn Italian – Advice For Newbies

Learning to speak Italian (or another second language) is a great method of self improvement. The information you will discover whilst learning Italian will hold you in good stead not only for Italian but your own native tongue and even general knowledge. For example, your English grammar will improve if you learn Italian grammar. This could improve your ability to write better prose or even give presentations.

Learning a second language will make you more knowledgeable about your own culture because you will learn about Italian cultural traditions and references that will give you perspective on your own culture. Setting overly-optimistic goals can lead to you getting frustrated which could make you lose heart and give up (which you don't want).

If you have a cast iron determination to learn to speak Italian and have few responsibilities, I'd say you will have most success if you take an intensive immersion type course in Italy. Then take an extended period of time to live in Italy. Get a job even. If you do all these things I would say you will have a good understanding of the language within 6 months to a year. You'll certainly be able to chat confidently and understand what is going on.

Unfortunately, most people don’t have this luxury. They have a time sapping job or have to care for their family. They simply don't have the opportunity to dedicate all their time to learning the language.

If this sounds like you then you need to organize your time and structure your learning so that you are working smarter rather than harder. Set up a study routine. Determine a given day and time when all your concentration is set to learning Italian. No distractions or other things to do. Pure focus on the task.

Investigate local classes or for the more time poor out there, a home study course that can serve as your focal point when it comes to your education. As you get deeper into the course, you will find that it is easier to concentrate on the individual lessons becuase you have made more of a commitment.

The course is your focal point. You should spend most of the time you set aside to learning to speak Italian on this material but you can use other methods as you get more experienced. You will be able to use different and more enjoyable techniques to learn Italian. So you could check ou the latest Italian movies or TV programs. This will help you in many ways like vocabulary or grammar construction. It will be differentiated from a formal lesson as it will be enjoyable and part of your relaxation time. If you get to this stage, learning Italian will just be something you do without thinking about it and will cease to be something that you have to sacrifice doing other things to do it. This is when you really start to learn the language.
