A Beginners Guide to Installing Outside Christmas Lights

Christmas is the most joyous time of the year and putting up decorations should not diminish the fun and excitement associated with the wonderful holiday. Before buying decorations and spending hours labouring over lights, reindeer, and the life size Santa Claus, we suggest you spend a few minutes deciding on a theme or style for the decorations. These can range from lighting up the neighbour with enough outdoor Christmas lights your house can be seen from space or having a modest selection of matching white or coloured lights on your house and shrubbery. After deciding on the style of lights, think about the placement and in what order should the lights go up, nothing is worse than having completed the outdoor lights and realise you have missed a strand.

Purchasing lawn decorations and outdoor lights can be overwhelming, so go in with a list and a budget to eliminate the chance of over spending. Check all lights to make sure they are the same type and colour. Notice outdoor light strands come in a variety of lengths, we suggest buying the longest strands for outdoors to be sure you have enough to cover the whole house. However when choosing indoor light strands, shorter is better. Shorter strands are easier to use and eliminates the need to end of the strand.

Finding the perfect length and style is only half of the purchasing process. A common mistake is confusing outdoor and indoor lights. Outdoor lights are waterproof and have a special seal around the bulb to protect against corroding and short circuiting. Outdoor lights work both indoor and outdoor but outdoor lights tend to be more expensive. If you are used strands from a previous year, plug all the strands in to check if any blubs have gone out before putting them up and realising bulbs are burnt out.

Putting the plan into action is the key to a successfully lit home. Hanging larger blubs on the roof and smaller on the lower portions of the house gives the impression of one uniform size. The best way to hang lights is start at the highest point and work down the house, checking every few strands for placement and look.

Connecting strands can be a dangerous so be sure the end is not plugged in when connecting the strands. All connections should be covered and waterproofed. There are a few methods of waterproofing the connections. The easiest and most economical is duct taping over connections until the meeting is sealed. Another way is to tape a plastic bag over all connections. Whether you use the methods above or your own, make sure the connections are secure and waterproof!

To complete the perfect outdoor light setup place a few of your favourite Christmas time decorations. Finalising the creation is connecting all strands and decorations to a master outlet, ideally with a timer. Depending on the amount of outdoor lighting strands hung, it might be necessary to connect to several outlets.

After all is done, take your family outside and admire the planning and hard work put into creating your own personal Christmas wonderland.
