How To Make Your Bedroom Uniquely Yours

Are you bored with your bedroom? Are your kids feeling cramped in bedrooms they have long since outgrown? If the answer to these questions is yes, then it’s time to redecorate. Your bedroom should feel like your personal space, a place for rest, contemplation, relaxation and romance. It should be much more to you than just a place where you go to turn off the lights and sleep.

When you decorate your bedroom, don’t feel like you have to decorate it in the same style as the rest of your home is decorated. Do what you like with it. Make it your fantasy room. While you may have chosen modern leather sofas and glass and metal coffee tables for your living room, you can still make your master bedroom a sumptuous Empire Style salon, complete with a richly elaborate sleigh bed if you like.

If you have a large master bedroom and want to give it an elegant, sensual look, then you really can’t do better than sleigh beds. Did you know that these beds were inspired by the beds of the courtesans of the Emperor Napoleon? If anything bespeaks elegance, nobility and sensuality in a bedroom, this does.

While they were originally small beds that resembled daybeds and were used for that purpose, when the fashion took hold throughout Europe and America, the hallmark of a fashionable home became the king sleigh bed. Topped with a thick, downy quilt and deep, fluffy pillows, it became an invitation to luxury and romance.

Matching the rest of your bedroom furniture to your bed is just a matter of matching the color and species of wood and the style. If your bed is in the Empire style, so should your side tables, dressers and other incidental furnishings. There are exceptions to this rule, but unless you are a highly skilled interior designer, it’s best to play it safe.

When it comes to the children’s rooms, they probably have different tastes and needs to yours. Many children who have outgrown the bedroom that was fine for them when they were infants appreciate the addition of a new loft bed in their room. They love sleeping in them and you will love having the extra space underneath the bed for a computer workstation or desk for them to study at.

Because the bedroom is the most personal room in the home, it deserves special attention. The living room, the dining room and the kitchen are family rooms, but your bedroom is your own. Remember, when you close the door behind you, you are in your own world. Make that world a magical one.
