Creating Songs at Home Music Recording Studio
You can record and mix professional quality music at home because of the incredible improvements in “prosumer” audio gear. A home recording studio that would have cost many thousands of dollars to build 15 years ago can be built for less than three thousand dollars these days.
Your first investment if you want to build a home studio should be a high quality computer with plenty of hard drive space and lots of RAM. Luckily quality computers are becoming less expensive over the years. I recently purchased a computer with 8GB of RAM for just over $850.
After you buy your high quality PC or Mac (and the one you’re using now may be good enough) you need some kind of DAW program (this stands for “Digital Audio Workstation”) that you will be doing all of your mixing and recording with. The so called “industry standard” is Pro Tools but it’s definitely not the only choice (or necessarily the best choice, for example you could try Logic Studio instead if you’re on a Mac.)
What you get after that initial purchase of a computer and a DAW really depends on what kind of music you want to create. For example if you want to make entirely electronic music with no recording of vocals or real instruments then you may want to consider buying programs like Propellerheads Reason 4 but most folks (even those doing electronic based music) will want to be able to record vocals and instruments and will need some sort of audio interface.
If you’re one of those that is going to need an audio interface you should be aware that many of them actually come with free DAW software.
To give a simple answer to the question “What is an audio interface?” I’ll just say it’s how your recorded sound (whether it be from a microphone or a direct input) gets into your computer.. I use the E-MU 1616M and I highly recommend it for those on a PC who don’t need a lot of inputs. But there’s really a huge selection of audio interfaces to choose from, it’s too large of a topic to cover in detail in this space. Pro Tools is the so called “industry standard” when it comes to interfaces but that doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for you.
Microphones tend to be one of the first investments that most home recording enthusiasts make and for very good reason.. A mic lets you to record vocals and all sorts of acoustic instruments. It will clearly be a very important part of your home studio. The KSM44 Condenser Microphone is an excellent choice if you can afford to buy it.
Another piece of recording gear that is definitely think you should consider is the Art MPA Gold Preamp because it’s a really great deal at consider it’s low price online.
