Sheet Metal Brake – An Overview of the Different Types
A sheet metal brake, used for bending the basic material, is one of many items of equipment used in the sheet metal fabrication industry. They are also called bending machines or bending brakes.
Depending on the job at hand, different types of brake are used.
For simple creases and bends, a cornice brake is used. For more complex box-and-an shapes, a box-and-pan brake is called for.
Brakes work in the following way. The metal sheet is placed on a flat surface, extending over the edge at the point where the bend is to take place. It is securely clamped by a descending clamping bar. There is a gate-like plate at the front which, when lifted, bends the metal around the clamping bar.
Cornice brakes use solid clamping bars, the full width of the machine, so they can only produce straight bends along the entire width of the sheet.
Box-and-pan brakes, on the other hand, have clamping bars which consist of several removable blocks, which can be taken out and rearranged as needed. This allows for much greater flexibility, and can produce complex form in sheet metal or components which are already partly fabricated.
A simpler kind of brake is the bar folder. This uses a single handle to clamp and bend the sheet. The angle of bend achievable here is usually much less than a cornice or box-and-pan brake can provide.
More complex is the press brake. Press brakes clamp the metal sheet between a matching punch and die and apply pressure to create the bend. They can be powered by different means – mechanical, hydraulic, servo-electric or pneumatic.
Until around the middle of the last century, mechanical brakes were the most common.
Nowadays, with the advancements we have seen in computer technology, hydraulic presses are the most common.
According to industry requirements, presses come in different sizes. Light brass or aluminum, suitable for creating small boxes, can be worked by small, hand-operated brakes. For more demanding work, there are large, industrial-sized machines. Hand-operated or counterweighted, hydraulic presses are used for working large sheets of metal. Computer controlled hydraulic presses can be used for precision, high quality work. Modern hydraulic presses are highly accurate, do not use too much power, and are safer than their old mechanical counterparts.
