Queens – Sunnyside Neighbour Hood

No place is more ethnically diverse than the great Borough of Queens in New York City, and one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the county is called Sunnyside. Its first claim to fame was for the planned community within a community named Sunnyside Gardens, one of the first to incorporate the “super block” model in the United States, with several homes sharing a common garden.

Mostly farmland until development as a bedroom community in the 1920s, Sunnyside today remains desirable for its proximity to Manhattan, and has the distinction of offering Tibetan, Nepali, and Romanian cuisine within five blocks of one another, somewhat unusual fare even in New York City. Still the mixed-income neighborhood it’s always been, the community has also total urbanization and maintains a slightly bucolic atmosphere with some of its private homes still intact.

Further east and north lies Elmhurst, one of the city’s several unofficial Chinatowns though over one hundred and twenty nations are represented, with hispanics actually making up a majority of the population. And though it was an almost exclusively Jewish and Italian neighborhood prewar, Elmhurst remains solidly working class, even if it is heavily urbanized with almost none of its former bucolic atmosphere left.

But as is often the case in New York City, change can be both positive and negative, and rounding out some of the missed memories of yesteryear is the diverse smorgasbord of ethnic flavors to be found today in Elmhurst. It is also host to the borough’s only two true shopping malls, sprawling multi-level affairs that resemble those to be found in spacious suburbia. Nearby Flushing Meadows-Corona Park offers ample space and playgrounds for families, with a theater, a zoo, an ice-skating rink, gym facilities, indoor swimming pool, children’s science museum, and more scattered throughout its 1,225 acres – now how’s that for diversity!
