Preparing For Your Outdoor Adventure

Relaxing when away from the job is done a variety of ways by different people. A relaxing trip to the beach or a day at a museum may be the best way to unwind for some people. However a hiking trip outdoors allows for physical exercise and a chance to see the beautiful sights outside.

The equipment needed to hike outdoor will vary according to the terrain and difficulty of the areas to be traveled. A well worn path may be done in a pair of athletic shoes, shorts and a T-shirt, while more difficult areas would require more durable wear. Proper footwear is important, regardless if you are going for a 1 hour walk or a multiple day hike.

If using a Trail Hiking boot make sure it offers good stability to your ankle and fits well. It should be lose enough to allow you to move your toes and should not cause any pinching. Waterproofing is important and should be done once in awhile to protect your feet. Many new types of boots have a lining that is designed to keep moisture out but allow perspiration to escape, which will keep your feet safer.

While waterproofing the leather watch which waterproofing method you use. Wax based waterproofing will prevent the boots natural breathing, so recommendations are to use a silicon based treatment. Cleaning and waterproofing your footwear should be done as needed.

Hiking footwear has come a long way and is very diverse to meet different types of terrain. For light hiking on a groomed trail you can find hiking sandals, a bit more rugged than a normal sandal. Also the popular hiking shoe is available, which is great for Trail Running. Hiking shoes are usually light weight and flexible, perfect for groomed trails or light off trail work. As you can see, hiking footwear has evolved into more than just the standard, stiff brown boot!

It is best to know the environment you are hiking in and wear the appropriate equipment and clothing. Long sleeved shirts and pants will give your skin protection during off trail hiking, but if the weather is warm may be too much for a groomed trail. A light T-shirt and shorts fit right in on a groomed trail, weather permitting.

There are items you can bring to make your hike more comfortable and safe. The environment and weather will determine how much drinking water you should bring; also keep in mind how long you plan on being on the trail. If you only have a set amount of time to hike, a ladies or men’s sport watch is a must to let you know when you reach your limit. If the hike is going to be for 1 hour you can check the watch often and turn around after 30 minutes have passed. Also for the sake of safety remember a cell phone, you may not need it but it is best to have it anyways.
