Why David Wong for Sheriff of San Francisco

David Wong has worked at the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department for twenty years as a law enforcement officer. Eight of his twenty years, he served as the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association President; bettering work related conditions in the Sheriff’s Department, representing deputies in work related incidents, contract negotiating, changing the employee status in the charter and elevating deputy sheriff’s status in the community.

David Wong was President of an association of over 800 deputies. He had organized events, meetings, spoken publically to large groups. He offered and implemented ideas that have made positive changes within the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department. He has seen what can be done better, what needs to be changed, what needs to be implemented to bring the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department to be a functional respected law enforcement agency in San Francisco, but also within the United States.

David Wong has stated, “I was only able to achieve about 40 percent of the goals I expressed over the years that I wanted to bring to you (Deputy Sheriffs).” David Wong had made great accomplishments in receiving comparable salaries for deputy sheriffs (reducing the turn over rate), alternative work schedules and more.

The other 60 percent that David Wong wanted to achieve had been blocked by the Sheriff’s Administration in the areas of community related law enforcement activities, law enforcement expansion of functions, more alternative work schedules for deputies. David Wong realizes that there are many small dysfunctional law enforcement agencies in San Francisco, that do not receive the proper professional training, that do not have the man power and generate a lot of overtime, and they do not have the experience and knowledge that the San Francisco Deputies have from their training and daily experience with incarcerated felons and misdemeanor prisoners.

David Wong believes that these small San Francisco law enforcement agencies should be absorbed by the Sheriff’s Department. This can save San Francisco a lot of money, by reducing the overtime of those agencies, since the SFSD has the man power to provide personal 24/7, reduce cost in training since SFSD has its own professional training unit and it would create a safer San Francisco and a more unified San Francisco.

David Wong has exclusive ideas to develop working rehabilitating programs for San Francisco County Jail prisoners. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation conducted a evaluation and found San Francisco to have one of the highest rates of recidivism in California at 78.3 percent return to prison within 3 years, yet San Mateo County and Alameda County Sheriff’s Department is below the state average rate of recidivism.

David Wong would also like to put the prisoners to work, with work crews cleaning and beautifying San Francisco, especially in the tourist area which brings in revenue for San Francisco businesses. For example, we have all been down Market Street and seen how filthy it is at times and in some areas the odor is very undesirable and unhealthy for everyone. Even around the Hall of Justice, where the Sheriffs Department and the Police Department operate is filthy. We have a jail full of prisoners, that need to repay society, learn good work traits, and would actually volunteer to do that job as well. This of all places should be spotless and exemplary.

In order to successfully complete these goals and many others while also bringing better safety to all San Francisco communities, David Wong is running for the position of Sheriff of the City and County of San Francisco.

In 2007, you might remember David Wong on the Ballet. He ran for Sheriff in 2007 and received 34,031 votes in San Francisco against the current, retiring Sheriff Hennessey. For his first time out, running for Sheriff and receiving 34,031 votes in San Francisco is an Amazing accomplishment. This just shows you the people of San Francisco are interested in David Wong for Sheriff and that they want a Real Change!

Safety, order and removing politics from the San Francisco Law Enforcement and Jails is a goal that benefits us all.
