Emotions, moods, and fleeting moments are so difficult to capture on canvas that many artists avoid doing portraits. One courageous, self taught artist displays his portraits on his living room walls in the home he shares with his wife in Marion. It took some time for him to complete a grand montage of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. Individual portraits line the other walls, including those of the lead singer of Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. His favorite tools are pencil, graphite, and charcoal. Conte crayon and colored pencil pieces were next. His wife originally comes from Kobe, Japan, and their wedding photo is what he used for his first colored pencil drawing. He mixed and matched American and Japanese wood block print styles. Instead of what they actually wore at the wedding, he drew them in kimonos. Her matriarchal symbol is a flower called the kikyo, which he uses to decorate her with. Outside the room, past the third cat that is behind the vertical blinds, is a gingko tree.
