Baby Knowledge You Might Not Yet Have

It’s common knowledge that babies are fun and cute. They wear goofy clothes that are somehow still cute. At what other stage in life can a person wear a t-shirt that says “Daddy’s Princess” without getting funny looks? You might think that it’s not that hard being a baby. These same people seem to think that, except for an inability to communicate properly, babies are not that much different from adults. Babies are actually quite complex creatures who have very specific needs. Here are some things about babies that you might not have known already.

Did you know already that babies are not very good at telling colors apart? It will take some time after a baby is born for his eyes to finish maturing and for the synapses between them and his brain to be complete. This is one of the reasons why babies respond better to primary colors whey they are used in a room or on toys. Bold reds, blues, greens and even black and white are best for babies. Babies can’t tell the difference between pastels.

This is often the motivation behind a baby’s toy preferences. Pastels are meant more for an adult’s sense of cuteness while the black and white things that are so often turned down are actually better for your son or daughter’s development.

Before they are born most infants are able to understand and recognize different songs and music types. By thirty four weeks of life the baby is able to recognize different songs. This means that the baby spends more than a month in the womb being able to identify different types of music! Some women say that they will sometimes feel their babies moving to the rhythm of some music. So a person’s musical preference does show up before the child is conditioned to like one type of music over another. Aren’t you excited about that?

Everybody knows that babies use crying to communicate their need for service or attention but did you know that the baby does not cry real tears until he or she is almost a month old? Tears are made up of water and hormones that are excreted when a person is under stress. This is one of the reasons that stress makes people cry: the body forces the stress induced hormones out of the body to calm itself down. Babies do not produce these hormones before birth. Sometimes real tears take a few weeks to show up because it takes the baby a while to begin producing the stress hormone. It takes other babies a few months to begin producing the hormone and crying real tears. Many people are fascinated by babies. Nobody really knows exactly how they learn or how quickly they learn it. The one thing everyone can agree on is just how quickly babies change and how amazing it is to watch them grow up.
