Why do wood veneer book shelves sag?

I’ve had 2 bookcases made of wood veneer in the past and the shelves always started to sag after a while, even if I just put a row of paperback books on it. Is it ever possible to own a veneer bookcase without its shelves sagging? I have a collection of lighter, paperback books as well as a lot of heavy, coffee table books. Should I look into a solid wood bookcase for the heavier ones? I’m tired of sagging shelves.

Humidity is most likely a problem causing your sagging. But the reason humidity is effecting them so badly is because, like you said, they’re particle board and veneer. Solid wood (99% of the time) does not sag under light load such as books. You could do as Tom suggested and add some bracing to the front/back of the shelf, but you are almost always better off using any furniture made of solid wood than particle board….even plywood shelves would be better than particle board.
